October 12th is the night of our fourteenth HEAR/HEAR Reading Series and you are all invited. Featured at the Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave), HEAR/HEAR 14 is proud to showcase work from our talented S.W.A.T. writers: Roseanne Carrara, Colin Frizzell and Elisabeth de Mariaffi. We'll be giving away wonderful books and an exclusive NHT! t-shirt in our HEAR/HEAR raffle plus we'll be selling our student anthologies: The Armadillo, The Barracuda and The Capybara that evening too! If you popped by to see NOW HEAR THIS! at Word on the Street or read about it on our blog, you may have noticed our spectacular poetry board. If you missed on the fun, come on over to HEAR/HEAR 14 and try your hand at some spontaneous poetry writing!

Grab a sweater, grab a friend and come out to HEAR/HEAR 14! Enjoy performances from talented Toronto writers and make some friends along the way.

Come Celebrate 40 Years of Descant!

Possible Worlds You probably already know (if you're an NHT! devotee) that NOW HEAR THIS! developed from a desire within the Descant Magazine community to reach out and improve literacy and literary education in Toronto.

Well, now Descant is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a fancy-pants launch for the most recent issue of the magazine: Descant 153: Possible Worlds. Descant 153 includes new work by outstanding contributors from its 40 year history, including Nancy Huston, Mark Kingwell, Priscila Uppal, Michael Redhill and many, many more.

The launch is being held in the Brigantine Room at the Harbourfron Centre (235 Queens Quay W.) this Wednesday, June 29th from 7:30-10:30 pm. Tickets are $10.

Readers over the course of the evening include former NHT! staffer (and Trillium Book Award winner) Pasha Malla, as well as bill bissett, K.V. Skene, Steven Heighton and Barbara Schott.

So come celebrate 40 years with us! There will be light refreshments available and great friends and readings!

HEAR/HEAR in less than a month!

Last HEAR/HEAR rocked so hard, it would be unforgivable to launch up another. Unforgiveable.

HEAR/HEAR is pulling out all the big guns as we present our twelfth instalment (12 Reading Series!) on June 15 at The Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave). We've got a stellar line up of performers: Tanis Rideout, Ibi Kaslik, Devon Code and a special musical guest Liam Ward.

In the tradition of all things HEAR/HEAR, there will be a raffle for books generously donated by The Flying Dragon Bookstore plus a exclusive NOW HEAR THIS! t-shirt.

All our readers are part of the NOW HEAR THIS! Students Teachers and Writers program and do fantastic work within high schools across the city and HEAR/HEAR is our way of saying thanks.

Toronto Public Library does Asian Heritage Month!

Asian Heritage Month acknowledges the long and rich history of Asians and Asian Canadians during the month of May. The Toronto Public Library this year encompasses many cultural aspects from the largest continent on the world. From Northern Asia: Chinese dynasties, East Asia: Japanese origami, West Asia: Arabic Persian and Turkish dance, South Asia: Indian yoga; there are workshops for everyone. We at NOW HEAR THIS! love oral storytelling so we're recommending a handful of storytelling events taking place at various libraries around the city. Check out the lineup!

A LOVE-ly Reading from S.W.A.T. Alumnus Paul Vermeersch!

Flowers and chocolates are dandy but nothing says "lovely" like spoken word poetry! Right? The "Making Love in the Junction" reading takes place February 13 at the Wise Daughters Craft Market (3079 Dundas Street West) featuring S.W.A.T. alumnus Paul Vermeersch! Paul is the author of four collections of poetry, most recently The Reinvention of the Human Hand (McClelland & Stewart, 2010).

We love Paul and what better way of expressing that love than urging all of you to join us in what is sure to be a wonderful evening. And bring your loved ones: boyfriends, girlfriends, family and friends. We're sure they'll love you for it!
