Every week throughout the summer, Word Out is picking three books — one fiction, one non-fiction and one graphic novel to recommend to youth readers.

New Year, new resolutions?

Welcome to the new year! We are already getting the sense that 2010 (or twenty-ten as we have to get used to saying) is going to be a pretty rad year for NOW HEAR THIS! — as soon as we remember to stop writing down "2009".

A new year means all kinds of new beginnings which is why the tradition of making New Year's resolutions is so popular. You give yourself a clean slate, so it's a perfect time to start a new project, like, say… a writing project! If you want to become an all-star writer there's no better moment to start than right now! (Or after you finish reading this post.)

Happy Halloween!!

Here at NHT! headquarters we’re always looking for ways to make writing fun. 
I still remember one of the songs we used to sing at Halloween -- way back in grade one! It went: "Bats when they fly go squeak"  (which would be followed by making a blown-up balloon squeak). As much of a child’s song as that is, someone still had to write it! If they can write that, you can write something too. I don't think I have to go out on much of a limb to say it will be better than that!
